Child Development : Child Abuse

Every day, all around the world, millions of children are abused and neglected. Even though we would rather avoid it, this issue is a top priority. This scourge afflicts children of all races, ages, sexes and economic levels. At any cost to mankind, child abuse and child neglect must cease and desist.

Essentially, neither a person's status or class nor a certain historical level of society determines the unfortunate occurrence of child abuse and child neglect.

Here is the government's definition of neglect and child abuse:

If a parent is aware of, but does not act in an adequate manner on any actions of a caregiver that results in sexual abuse, physical or mental harm, or death of a child.

Child abuse or neglect happens when the care provider neglects to intervene when either an action or a lack of action might result in harm or injury.

In this case the law is quite clear and we see in the news at night some of the horrible instances of child abuse. There is no "cut and dried" child abuse case. The importance of knowing the exact definition of child abuse is imminent.

In-utero child abuse can occur before a child is born, if the mother uses drugs that are harmful to the fetus, drinks alcohol, or uses tobacco. It is a high risk situation of child abuse if a mother performs these actions.  If you think it might be child abuse you should report it to the authorities. If you notice a child in a dangerous situation or there is proof that the child is being abused physically, it is your responsibility to tell someone about abuse or neglect. You can find the phone number for the "Child Protective Services" in your telephone book.

A little whack on the butt and abusing a child are two entirely different things. Striking a child with a belt, closed fist, or anything is child abuse and must be reported.
